AFTRA represents its members in four major areas: 1) news and broadcasting 2) entertainment programming 3) the recording business and, 4) commercials and non-broadcast, industrial, educational media. AFTRA works closely with its sister entertainment unions to assure industry standards are uniform and fair in all these areas.
AFTRA's 80,000 members are seen or heard on television, radio and sound recordings and include actors, announcers, news broadcasters, singers (including royalty artists and background singers), dancers, sportscasters, disc jockeys, talk show hosts and others. Talent payments under AFTRA contracts are over $1 billion a year.
AFTRA provides Pension and Medical insurance to performers, as well as assures fair compensation through negotiating National and local contracts affecting talent work performances. Signatories to these Agreement guarantee that the applicable Code (contract) will be followed and payment are made in a reasonable time period, subject to fines and late charges when appropriate. AFTRA Franchised Agents assure practicing standards negotiated by AFTRA regarding respective rights and obligations of agents and talent to each other. As a professional organization, AFTRA helps promote and develop local markets for employment opportunities for its members and helps educate and train professionals through seminars, conservatory work shops, and web based services. AFTRA Staff is always available to assist and counsel as needed.
